CHAPTER 10

We Can Remember That Deep Down Inside We All Need The Same Thing

This is the thing we so often forget when we encounter conflict. We are all the same inside. We all want the same things: love, encouragement, attention, peace, success. It’s a tenet of acting that when you play a villain, you can’t play him as though he were evil. You are living inside this person, so you have to connect with his deepest desires, why he feels he has to act this way, what he needs and wants. When we look at other people, especially when they disagree with us or seem to be in our way, it can be hard to remember that they are just like us inside—human—and want the same thing. The person behind the counter at the airport, whom we regard as not giving us what we want because the plane was cancelled, may feel terrible to be disappointing all of these people, even though it’s not her fault, and may be very anxious about being yelled at by angry customers. I know of countless examples of flights being cancelled, where one person comes up (sometimes that one person has been me) and takes the time to consider how difficult it is for the employee having to deal with all these disgruntled people. More often than not, if anyone gets another flight out quickly or gets bumped to First Class, it’s the one who has been kind.
